Moral Reconciliation Essay From the beginning of the story to the end, Huckleberry Finn’s morals change rather dramatically and the novel focuses largely on this. Forced to reconcile his personal feelings of friendship for an escaped slave (Jim) with what society has told him is right, Huck learns through the course of the story to trust his moral instincts. As the story progresses, we see Huck’s character develop strong morals that eventually lead to his reconciliation. Early in the book, Huck is shown to have a low level of maturity and is very naà ¯ve. He relies more on the opinions of others more so than his own. Huck seems to know the rightful place of a slave, especially growing up in the American South. But this changes, in time, when he meets a runaway slave named Jim on Jackson Island. Huck knows he is defying society by not turning Jim in, but he continues to stay by Jim’s side and feels he can’t betray him as their friendship grows. This is an internal moral struggle for Huck, because he knows to society he is â€Å"wrong,† but to him their friendship made it â€Å"right.† While floating down the Mississippi, Huck and Jim come across a shipwreck. Huck, being the young, curious boy he is wants to explore it. Jim on the other hand is very reluctant to do so, but he feels obliged to follow Huck along anyways because he is a slave and Huck is white. On the wreck the two find a gang of robbers and a tied up man, they decide to leave immediately at this site. Huck and Jim then steal the robbers boat, but Huck feels a little guilty for doing this. So he makes up a story to a ferryboat watchman that his family was on the wreck and they needed help. The watchman showed up on the site just to discover that it sank, and the robbers most likely dead. Compassion is a key part in developing good morality and at this point Huck’s morality is slowly taking shape because he feels compassion for others. During a terrible storm, Huck and Jim are separated. Jim searches for Huck, but he cannot pinpoint him, so he goes to sleep. Huck eventually arrives on the raft to find Jim sleeping. Once Jim woke up Huck told him that the whole storm fiasco was just an elaborate dream he had, but Jim soon discovers he is lying and becomes upset. Seeing this, Huck felt guilty for hurting Jim’s feelings and apologizes. This is a pivotal point in the novel because Huck realizes that he has feelings for this slave. Once again he knows society would see this as â€Å"wrong† and just plain crazy. Huck is having another internal conflict, but feels that his friendship with Jim is morally â€Å"right† contrary to what society would think. Huck’s moral dilemmas are rooted in conflicting systems of morality: that of his upbringing and that of his own natural feelings of friendship for Jim. â€Å"I was paddling off, all in a sweat to tell on him; but when he says this, it seemed to kind of take the tuck all out of me. I went along slow then, and I warnt right down certain whether I was glad I started or whether I warnt. When I was fifty yards off, Jim says: Dah you goes, de ole true Huck; de ony white genlman dat ever kep his promise to ole Jim. Well, I just felt sick. But I says, I GOT to do it – I cant get OUT of it. Right then along comes a skiff with two men in it with guns, and they stopped and I stopped.† This a good example of Huck’s moral conflictions. At the climax of the novel, Huck as an epiphany. When Jim gets turned in by the conmen (the Duke and the King), Huck is devastated. Confused at what to do, Huck writes a letter that is intended for Ms. Watson, the letter reads: Miss Watson, your runaway nigger Jim is down here two mile below Pikesville, and Mr. Phelps has got him and he will give him up for the reward if you send. Huck Finn. After wrestling with his morals and consciousness, Huck makes his most important moral decision yet, when he states: All right, then, Ill GO to hell – and tore it up. He ultimately helped Jim escape. In the end, Huck acted on the highest level of morality regardless of society’s laws and ideas. Early in the story Huck displayed childish traits and a skewed morality because of how he grew up. But Huck changed entirely in his time spent with Jim. When life was forced upon Huck he had to develop and â€Å"grow up† rather fast. He quickly progressed from a naà ¯ve boy to a mature morally correct young man. Most humans strive for the betterment of themselves and society as a whole, and this is what makes Huck’s final reconciliation so compelling.

Herodotus :: Ancient Greece Greek History

Herodotus Herodotus (484-424 BC ?) a Greek historian, known as the father of history, who was the first historian to apply critical evaluation to his material, while also recording divergent opinions. He made his prose style resemble the finest poetry by its persuasiveness, its charm, and its utterly delightful effect. Although his writings have been praised, their trustworthiness has been questioned both in ancient and modern times. After four years in Athens, he traveled widely in Egypt, Asia and the Black Sea region of E. Europe, before settling at Thurii in S. Italy in 443 BC. He wrote accounts of his various travels for the people of Greece. He read his, "History" publicly to the Athenians and was rewarded for this historical work. He contrived to set before his fellow citizens a general picture of the world, of its various races, and of the previous history of those nations which had one. He also was very careful to diversify his pages by scattering among his more serious matter tales, a necdotes, and descriptions of a lighter character, which are very graceful additions to the main narrative. Two men are famous contemporaries of Herodotus, Thucydides, and Xenophon, who were both from Athens. Thucydides (460 BC - 400 BC?) was a better historian than Herodotus and his critical use of sources and research made his "History of the Peloponnesian War" a significant influence on later generations of historians. Xenophon (430 BC - 355 BC?) began his "Hellenica where Thucydides ended his work about 411 BC and carried his history to 362 BC. His writings were superficial in comparison to those of Thucydides, but he wrote with authority on military matters. Herodotus believed that many Greek rituals and customs were inherited from the Egyptians as the Greek civilization developed. He recorded the wide range of religious practices he encountered in his travels, comparing the religious observances of various cultures, such as sacrifice and worship, with their Greek equivalents. He quite possibly followed the cult practices of Serapis, which is the Greek Name for Osiris the embodiment of goodness, who ruled the underworld. He identified Isis with Demeter, the Greek goddess of earth, agriculture, and fertility. About two centuries later, under the Greco-Egyptian Empire, which was created by Alexander the Great, the worship of Osiris (Serapis) was developed as a means of uniting the Greeks and Egyptians. He observed that the Egyptians strongly opposed the acceptance of foreign customs.

I. The Student Union has the following objectives for a better university. A. Enhance the unity between students and strengthen the ties between them and other members of university community. B. Spread the culture and encourage the formation of Active Working Groups (AWGs) and student associations, and coordinating work between them and supporting their activities by providing financial support and manpower if needed. C. Work on solving the problems of students and provide a better university life within the university and beyond. D. Discuss the problems of the students and propose solutions to them, with the concerned officials and care after the rights and interests of students. E. Expressing the student  community’s opinion on national and international levels. F. Discover the talents and abilities of the students, help them refine their Skills, enhance their leadership skills and encourage them to benefit their society. II. The formation of the Student Union consists of a Student Council, six committees, Presidential Cabinet, Senate, Club’s Coordination Committee (CCC), and the Student Union Partnership Office (SU PO). (Show slide and pass out the brochures) A. The Student Council is the students’ voice and it is concerned with their opinion on all matter and decisions directly related to them. Its formation is: 1. The Faculty Union which is responsible for looking after each faculty needs. It consists of two members from each faculty in each committee. There are a President and a Faculty Treasurer for each faculty elected directly by students. 2. The University Union which is responsible for looking after the university needs. It consists of one member from each faculty in each committee. There is a head for each committee elected internally by the members of each Committee. 3. In each committee the three members are from three different Academic years. 4. The elections for the high board is required which is done within the student council itself. It consists of the Presidential Cabinet, six heads of the committees of the University Union and six faculty presidents from the Faculty Union. 5. The Student Council committees are as follows: a. Scientific & Technological Activities Committee holds workshops and lectures aiming at developing the scientific and technological abilities. b. Culture, Arts & Political Awareness Committee supports and organizes cultural and artistic activities seminars, conferences, exhibitions, debates and all forms of political activities. c. Planning & Resources Committee which is responsible for preparing the needed resources for the events. It also helps to plan and organize the events. d. Sports Committee supports and organizes training programs, tournaments and all forms of sportive activities. e. Trips & Social activities Committee organizes educational and entertainment trips. f. Public & Environmental Services strive to increase environmental awareness between students and organize events and activities. B. The Presidential Cabinet of the  Student Union manages the affairs of the Student Union and supervises its progress. It is tasked with: 1. Acting as chief representative and spokesperson of the Student Union. 2. Ensuring that all committees are functioning properly and fulfilling their duties. 3. Ensuring that the objectives of the Student Union are realized. 4. Calling at least two general meetings every semester, attended by all Student Union members including members of the Senate. 5. Calling weekly meetings to discuss the progress of work in the Student Union. 6. After the new President is elected the former President has to handle all the properties of Student Union such as the Student Union room and its belongings, the official page on facebook, the e-mail†¦ 7. The Presidential Cabinet consists of four core positions. They are as follows: a. Vice-President which is responsible for fulfilling any tasks of the Student Union President that are delegated to him/her or that the President is unable to perform. b. Treasurer which is responsible for the Student Union budget, its financial statements and its financial affairs. c. Vice-President for Events & Student Activities which is responsible for coordinating the events between the different entities in the Student Union and between the Student Union and the Club’s Coordination Committee. d. Vice-President for Planning and Resource which is responsible for conducting a timeline for the Student Union events, and providing the resources needed. C. The Student Union Partnership Office consists of the Student Union President and the six heads of the University Union Committees. It aims to form a bond between the Student Union in the university and Student Unions of foreign universities, to exchange information, experiences & educational programs. D. The Senate consists of two elected members from each faculty each given the title ’Senator’. The Senate is responsible for evaluating the performance of the Student Union members and recommending corrective action where and if needed. E. The Club’s Coordination Committee’s purpose is to aid clubs to coordinate with each other and it reports directly to the Student Union president. It consists of a representative of every club in the university delegated by heads, Vice president of events and activities, and director of youth welfare. III. There are some rules and regulations for the nominee. A. Not under probation. B. No history of disciplinary actions. C. Not been terminated from the previous Student Union. D. Paid the Student Union annual fees. E. Spent at least two semesters as students at the GUC. F. Not a member of any active working group. CONCLUSION I. Summary A. The Student Union’s main aim is to discuss the problems of the students and propose solutions to them. B. The Student Union consists of Student council, six committees, Presidential Cabinet, Senate, Club’s Coordination Committee (CCC), and the Student Union Partnership Office. C. The solution is to vote for the most suitable nominee and attend the debates in order to choose the best program provided by the nominees for a better university life. II. Clincher A. Tsebelis (1995) offered veto player framework to understand why public policy changes in particular political system. This framework offers more detail explanation on the public policy changes than other institutional theory, because veto player framework focuses on the actor instead of the institutions. This paper reviews three articles on welfare state’s policy change. Using the veto player framework, the three articles give the similar conclusion that in order to change the public policy, we should understand the number and position of veto points (Immergut, 1990) whether it is on the executive, legislative or electoral, so we can construct the best strategies to propose the change, the institutional design (Immergut, 1990; Huber, Rubin and Stephen, 1993) and the common belief system among the players (Kremer, 2006). Immergut’s (1990) article tries to investigate how the professional group can influence the health care’s policy change in Switzerland, France and Sweden. Immergut chooses the three case studies because the three countries have different government’s intervention on healthcare system.
